CHIEF OF SCOUTS    24" x 30 "    oil on canvas
After the Battle of the Little Big Horn in 1876, where the Sioux Nation and their allies defeated Gen. Custers’ 7th. Cavalry, the Sioux were under constant assault by the U.S. Government. The army managed to enlist a number of “ non-hostile” indians to help scout the renegades and bring them in. These indian scouts were from many tribes including the Arapahoe, Cheyenne, Sioux and Crow. They were able to find a number of hostile camps but were unable to bring in Hunkpapa Sioux Chief Sitting Bull and his followers who fled to Canada.
Here an army Chief of Scouts with two Arapahoe indians is scanning the vast landscape before him in an attempt to track down the hostiles.
