AIN'T SHE A FANCY SQUAW?    20” x 30”    oil on canvas
Trading posts dotted the landscape of the Old West. Hard-bitten men seeking fortune risked their lives everyday, plying their wares and maintaining their enterprises. Whether it be for a fur company or themselves, their success depended upon their willingness to offer their goods at reasonable prices and to accommodate the indians with whom they traded.
On a sunny afternoon, two Lakota indians come to trade buffalo robes at a trading post in Dakota Territory. Though both parties are vigilant regarding hostile intentions, the fact that the brave brought along his wife is a sign that his intentions are peaceful. It is visibly clear that his wife is used to the finer things in indian life, adorned as she is with her beaded dress and shady parasol and her horse bedeckt with decorated gear.
Noticing her, the trader exclaims " Ain't she a fancy Squaw?"
