The Gros Ventre are a tribe of indians living in Northern Montana. Never a large tribe, they were occasionally aligned with the Blackfeet to the North West and the Mandan to the South East. The name Gros Ventre is French in origin and means " Big Bellies ".
This man is dressed in his finery,- his horned bonnet, war shirt, painted buffalo robe and peace pipe are all symbols of his success and leadership.
