MEDICINE OF THE LOOKING GLASS    24 " x 36 " oil on canvas
The Native Americans thought that many of the whiteman’s inventions and discoveries were filled with supernatural powers or “ big medicine”. Firearms, steel, locomotives, photography, glass and medicinal products were just a few of the many items that created such wonderment among the indians. Binoculars or looking glass were a highly prized possesion of many warriors. The fact that one can see farther without putting oneself at risk of detection was an asset many successful warriors could appreciate.
Here, three Lakota indians on a scout have come across something of interest along the treeline in the distance. Their leader spies upon this with his looking glass medicine while remaining hidden in the tall grass.
