TRACKING STOLEN PONIES    24” x 30”    oil on canvas
To steal ponies from an enemy was considered a honorable, albeit dangerous endeavor among many North American Indian tribes. Some tribes saw it as equivalent to counting coup - an honor system awarding recognition for war deeds. Aside from the recognition as an accomplished horse thief, the warrior also increased his personal wealth, for horses were considered a measure of wealth, the more he had the richer he was.
In hot pursuit of horse thieves, these four Northern Cheyenne come to a creek where the trail splits up. They must decide which to follow to recover their stolen ponies.
