ALONG THE WESTWARD TRAIL     21” x 38”    oil on canvas
The pursuit of manifest destiny led many emigrants to travel across the North American continent seeking a better life. They traveled along established routes, such as the Oregon, Santa Fe and California Trails to name a few. These trails led across the land’s of many indian tribes which looked upon the emigrants with curiosity in the beginning and eventual hostility in the end.
The trails were filled with hardships; wagons breaking down, lack of water, confrontations with the indians and the loss of family.
Here three indians come across a wagon trail littered with an emigrants belongings. Maybe the wagon was too heavy and the emigrants decided to lighten the load or there was the death of a child , in any case, the abandoned trunk was left behind. The indian picks up the doll from the trunk and wonders what kind of people these emigrants are.
